Flagstaff, AZ - 12 January 2010

2008 Olympic Marathon Trials competitor, Alvina Begay, will compete in the P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon to be held on Sunday, 17 January 2010 in Phoenix. Houston will be her first marathon since the World Championships held in Berlin, Germany in August 2009.

Also on the starting line in Houston will be Brett Gotcher. Gotcher, the 2009 US 20K National Champion, will be making his marathon debut. Gotcher has a personal best of 1:02:09 in the half-marathon (set in the 2009 US Half-Marathon Championships also held in Houston). Coach Greg McMillan wins Master's Title at USATF Marathon Trail Championships

Success breeds success. Athletes take confidence from one another’s performances and push themselves to new heights. This can be said not just of the runners in McMillanElite, but of the coaches as well.

This fall, Coach Greg McMillan quietly went about his preparations for the USATF Marathon Trail Championships in Ashland, Oregon. In a triumphant return to racing, Coach McMillan took the top Masters spot at the race, as well as 4th overall, with a spectacular time of 2:54:50. The course featured 3,700 feet of elevation gain over a dirt road and single track trail. The McMillanElite runners and staff would like to congratulate Greg on his fantastic effort and for raising the bar for the team to a new level.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - USA Track & Field announced Tuesday the Team USA women's marathon squad for the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, to be held in Berlin, Germany, August 15 - 30.

Based on her debut of 2:25:53 at the 2008 ING New York City Marathon, Kara Goucher (Portland, Ore.) leads the women's marathon squad to Berlin where they will compete on Sunday, August 23.

Joining Goucher on the line in Berlin will be Desiree Davila (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and Paige Higgins (Flagstaff, Ariz.), who both qualified for the team based on their performances at the 2008 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Davila was the top U.S. finisher in Chicago last fall, finishing fifth in 2:31:33. Higgins finished eighth in 2:33:06.

Based on their respective fourth and fifth place finishes at the 2008 Olympic Trials Marathon, Zoila Gomez (Alamosa, Colo.) and Tera Moody (Colorado Springs, Colo.) will round out the five-person team.

adidas-McMillanElite Athlete Lindsay Allen Sets New Steeplechase PR; Becomes 10th Fastest in US History

Lindsay Allen's dream season continues. After setting new PRs at 1500m and 5,000m earlier in the season, Allen ran her first 3,000m Steeplechase of 2009 at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational at Stanford University on 2 April. Breaking her previous PR (10:01) by nearly 20 seconds, Allen, who competed in the 3,000m Steeplechase in the 2008 Olympic Trials, finished 3rd in 9:40.83. This performance not only qualifies her for the 2009 US Track and Field Championships but is a provisional qualifying time for this summer's World Track & Field Championship to be held in Berlin, Germany in August. She also becomes the 10th fastest US woman in the Steeplechase.

Lemoncello and Burrell Set New PRs

2008 Olympian Andrew Lemoncello followed up his breakthrough 10,000m personal best (27:57 which makes him the 3rd fastest Scot in history) with a new 5,000m personal record at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational. Running 13:33, Lemoncello knocked 12 seconds from his previous best.

Former Georgia standout Ian Burrell ran his first 10,000m race of the year and like his teammates, recorded a new PR. Running 28:41, Burrell took 7 seconds of his previous best.

Allen, Lemoncello and Burrell will be in action again later in May.

Fife Herald (Scotland): Andrew Lemoncello's 27:57 10000m Makes Him 3rd Fastest All-Time Scot

28 April 2009

Scottish distance running received a much needed boost as Andrew Lemoncello posted the fastest 10,000m time by a Scot for seventeen years at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational Meet in Berkeley, California. The Fife AC athlete placed seventh in a world–class field in 27 minutes 57.23 seconds out sprinting leading European distance runner Martin Fagan (Ireland). Andrew’s time is the third fastest ever by a Scot, smashing apart his previous personal best of 28:28.04. The Scottish record still stands at Ian Stewart’s 27:43.03 set back in 1977. Andrew is now ranked as the 3rd fastest Scot of all time ahead of such greats as Lachie Stewart who won Commonwealth gold in 1970 with 28 minutes 11 seconds.
Andrew commented: "I felt great but was a little annoyed in the middle as the pace maker started to slow down when I wanted to be picking the pace up. I think I could have run at least another 10 seconds quicker had we kept pushing on and the conditions had been better. Sub 28 is fine though. Step in the right direction for the year. I'll be running the 5km this Saturday at Stanford."

Fife AC athletes dominated the honours at the East Fife Sports Council Annual Awards Ceremony held at Elmwood College last week. Crail junior Halina Rees was presented with the Achievement Award while Jenny Tan won the junior sports award. Nony Mordi was the senior award winner and long serving Fife AC stalwart Eleanor Gunstone received honorary life membership. Andrew Lemoncello received a special presentation having featured in the nominations every year since 2000.

Breakthrough Performances Continue for adidas-McMillanElite Athletes; Allen Wins 1500m

27 April 2009

At the Brutus Hamilton Invitational held the 24th of April at the University of California - Berkeley, adidas-McMillanElite athletes continued their incredible season of racing. The breakout performance of the night was from Jordan Horn. Going into this track season, Horn's 5,000m (3.1 miles) PR was 14:01 (4:31 per mile / 2:48 per km). In his first track race, he lowered this to 13:50 then at the Brutus Hamilton meet last Friday, dropped his PR another 19 seconds to 13:31 (4:21 per mile / 2:42 per km). In just his second year with adidas-McMillanElite, Horn has now dropped his 5,000m PR by 40 seconds and is qualified for the US Track Championships in June.

In the same 5,000m race, first year athlete, Matt Clark, continued his improvement. At the start of the season, his PR was 13:57. In his first race, he lowered this to 13:50 then at the Brutus Hamilton meet, dropped his PR another 5 seconds running 13:45 for 5,000m which also qualifies him for the US Track Championships in June.

Not to be outdone, 2008 Olympian Andrew Lemoncello also rose to a new level in the 10,000m (6.2 miles). Prior to the race, Lemoncello's 10,000m PR was 28:28 (4:34 per mile / 2:51 per km). At the meet, he knocked a whopping 31 seconds off of this time and broke the 28 minute barrier running 27:57 (4:29 per mile / 2:47 per km). Having already run a big PR at the half-marathon distance in January, Lemoncello continues to shine as his track season begins. His performance achieved one of the two standards necessary for competing in the World Track & Field Championships to be held in Berlin, Germany in late summer.

And yet again, Lindsay Allen showed she is a young runner to watch as she won the women's Invitational 1500m, equalling her second fastest time at 1500m. Allen has already run 3 PRs this season, lowering her 5K time an amazing 40 seconds and running 2 personal best in the 1500m. Next up for her will be her 2009 Steeplechase debut at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational this weekend.

McMillanElite Coach Trina Painter Sets State Record in Return to Track Racing
16 April 2009

At the Sun Angel Invitational held 11 April at Arizona State University in Tempe, Coach Trina Painter stepped onto the track for her first 5,000m track race in nearly five years. At the age of 42, she ran 17:14 and set a new Arizona State Record for her age. As would be expected, the rest of the adidas-McMillanElite team was inspired and motivated watching the former American Record holder at 20K toe the line again.

McMillanElite is fortunate to have Coach Painter working along side its runners - providing invaluable advice from someone who's "been there, done that" (and is still doing it!).

adidas Athletes Lindsay Allen, Andrew Lemoncello and Jordan Horn Set More PRs as Track Season Heats Up
15 April 2009

adidas-McMillanElite athlete Lindsay Allen set another PR at the Sun Angel Invitational held 11 April at Arizona State University in Tempe. Dropping down in distance to the 1500m, Allen surpassed her previous PR (set just three weeks earlier) by 5 seconds to clock 4:21. This is Allen's 4th personal best this outdoor season.

Jordan Horn and Andrew Lemoncello (making his 2009 outdoor track debut) also dropped down in distance to the 1500m and both set new personal best. Horn lowered his personal best by 3 seconds running 3:46 while Lemoncello lowered his best by 2 seconds running 3:45.

All three athletes used these under distance races to prepare for key races over the next 2 weeks. Allen will run another 1500m at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational (24 April, Berkeley, CA) as a tune up for her 2009 Steeplechase debut a week later at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational (Palo Alto, CA). Horn will next race the 5,000m (he already set a 11-second PR at 5,000m earlier this season) at the Brutus Hamilton meet while Lemoncello will run the 10,000m at the same meet.

Lopping an amazing 41 seconds from her previous PR, Allen finished in 15:48. Her time automatically qualifies her for the US Track Championships in June which will select the US Team for the IAAF World Track & Field Championships in Berlin in August.

Allen's next race will be the Sun Angel Invitational in two weeks and will be held on the same track where her most recent 800m and 1500m PRs were set.

Gotcher, Carlson, Briney and Higgins Set New Personal Best in US Half-Marathon Championships; Ian Burrell Runs 4:11 Mile at 7,000 Feet

Brett Gotcher's breakthrough 3rd place finish in a personal best time of 1:02:09 (4:45 per mile) at the US Half-Marathon was the start of a great day for the McMillanElite team. Gotcher was followed to the line by training partner, Andrew Carlson in 4th place, who also set a new personal best time of 1:02:21. Both athletes qualified for the 2012 US Olympic Marathon Trials. Also setting a personal best was Trent Briney. The 2004 Olympic Marathon alternate ran 1:04:55 and is already qualified for the 2012 Marathon Trials.

Not to be outdone, Paige Higgins ran a new personal best of 1:14:24 in the women's championship. Her teammate, Alvina Begay, signaled her return to form with a strong showing in 1:15:44.

In total, four of the six McMillanElite athletes competing set a new personal best.

Back in Flagstaff, the track-focused athletes competed in their first indoor meet - the Lumberjack Invitational at Northern Arizona University. Despite the thin air at 7,000 feet, Ian Burrell won the mile. Ian's mile time of 4:11.89 was just shy of US 800m Olympian Lopez Lomong's time of 4:09.54 on this same track in 2007. On the women's side, Becky Guyette and Lindsay Allen went 1-2 in the mile.

All three athletes hope to qualify for the USATF Indoor Track Championships at the Washington Invitational in Seattle on January 31st.

An Interview with McMillanElite Athlete Paige Higgins

Paige
Paige Higgins at the 2008 Chicago Marathon

[McMillanElite.com] Race day in Chicago was not ideal, though not nearly as hot as last year, the temperature was above average making for more difficult racing conditions. Tell us about how you have overcome this obstacle the past two years by finishing in the Top 10 at the Chicago Marathon.
[Paige] Well, really reflecting about it the weather never even crossed my mind. 2007 I remember it being warm, but both times I was focused on what I had come all the way out to Chicago for. With all the preparation that goes into a marathon, weather was the last thing that I was going to let affect my mentality. I definitely noticed it heating up toward the end, so i just started dumping water on my head every water stop and focusing on that. But really both times the weather didn't really cross my mind until someone would ask how I handled it. Greg had me well prepared, and I was in the race to compete, requardless of conditions.

[McMillanElite.com] How has your training been since Chicago and what are you looking forward to in the next few months?
[Paige] Training wasn't too fun at first, but I knew it was because my body had left all that work, all I had out on the course in Chicago. I took two weeks very cautious and easy, enjoyed my down time to make sure I was mentally rested as well. I wanted to come back strong. As hard as it is for runners to take time off, I really do believe it is crucial. It was hard for me mentally to not be running or training, but at the same time I am proud that I didn't come back too fast because my body is feeling strong again now that it counts. I'm looking forward to really improving my times across the board this spring, working on my flexibility and dynamics. Hopefully getting some more gears in my legs for the shorter races.

[McMillanElite.com] What is one thing you have focused on most in this recent training cycle?
[Paige] At first Greg and I were really focusing on coming back strong, and listening to my body. Then as I felt my body start to get stronger and more like myself, we have been trying to increase my dynamic capabilities, flexibility, and speed. It's something I know I'm going to have to get stronger at in order to compete and win the big races. It's humbling yet encouraging knowing I still have some pretty big weaknesses but with the support of the Wharton Clinic and Greg's coaching, they will subside with time.

[McMillanElite.com] What is one workout you feel you have improved upon the most since joining McMillanElite?
[Paige] I don't think it's necessarily a workout as just an overall improvement. My form is a little less "scooty" which I can attribute to Greg making me walk around with my feet turned in whenever I could remember (my feet turn out because of tight hip flexors). At Chicago my parents said they barely recognized my form which was such a compliment! Made all my goofy walking around town worth it! It sounds silly but I think I'm a little better at running on trails. When I first got here I took 3 pretty big dives which left quite a few scars. I have yet to fall since then, and on my secondary runs I run on "troads" (what I call trails, but everyone else considers roads...hey there's rocks!!!) to try to get my knee lift just a bit higher, and so that I don't peace out when my teammates want to run on them.
In terms of workouts I think that will be a great question in the spring! I am terrible at the quick 100 workouts right now, fast and short intervals. So I'm going to say I'm looking forward to improving on those and getting stronger. I love the marathon, it is my strength so all the workouts I went in confident in. Now it's all about working on the weaknesses, which I'm excited to start putting in the work for :)

Best of luck to you this weekend when you toe the line for the IronGirl 10 Mile Road Race in Tempe, Arizona.

McMillan-Trained Athletes Take 4 of Top 8 Places in Manchester Road Race

In what is considered the most prestigious Thanksgiving Day road race, McMillan-trained athletes took 4 of the top 8 places including race winner - Martin Fagan in the Manchester (CT) Road Race. Fagan, who has been coached by Greg for the last year, pressed the pace up the course's infamous mile-long hill then powered away to claim his first Manchester Road Race. Following Fagan's lead, McMillanElite athletes Andrew Carlson and Andrew Lemoncello claimed 4th and 5th with Cele Rodriguez in his first race since the US Marathon Championships finished in 8th place, running his fastest time for the Manchester course.

Fast Times by McMillanElite at Synaptics 5K

On the opposite coast and a few hours later than their teammates who raced the Manchester Road Race, McMillanElite athletes toed the line at the Synaptics Elite 5K in San Jose, CA. Running phenomenal times for their base training phase, Giliat Ghebray ran 13:43 (just one second off his track PR!) and Jordan Horn ran 13:47. Horn had never broken 14:00 for 5K (either on the track or the roads) so his performance is quite a breakthrough. Not to be outdone, Lindsay Allen and Becky Guyette both ran stellar races. Allen ran 16:24 (5 seconds faster than her track PR and a 29 second road PR!). Guyette, like Horn, had a breakthrough day running 16:25. Her track PR is 16:40 and her road PR was 16:57. These Thanksgiving Day races continue the strong running by the athletes who have set many PRs this fall.

Paige Higgins runs 2:33:06 - 7-minute PR at Chicago Marathon

The heat didn't quite match last year's 84 degrees but it did come close (81 degrees) at this year's Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Undeterred, Paige Higgins, the 2008 US 25k Champion, continued her streak of great running. She lowered her marathon best by over 7 minutes, running 2:33:06 in the hot conditions and placing 8th overall. This was her second top 10 performance in the Chicago Marathon in as many years.

After her recovery break, Higgins will return to competition with the goal of defending her 25K National Title in May and hopes to be selected to represent the US in the World Marathon Championships in Berlin next summer.

McMillanElite adidas athletes qualify for 2012 Olympic Trials

In what can only be called miserable conditions, Trent Briney and Cele Rodriguez finished 6th and 10th respectively in the 2008 US Marathon Championships. Their performances qualified each for the 2012 US Olympic Marathon Trials.

Cold temperatures, heavy rain and wind combined to make the Championships a significant challenge. Briney, the alternate on the 2004 US Olympic Marathon Team, was up to the challenge despite cramping for most of the race. Running his 2nd fastest marathon ever, Briney moved his way through the field over the last 10K to secure his 2012 qualifying standard.

Rodriguez, running his first marathon, ran in the lead group until the eventual winner made a move in mile 17. He followed his teammate to the finish to capture his 2nd top 10 finish in a US road championships this fall.

The Lydiard Foundation Teams with McMillanElite to Help Emerging Elite Distance Runners

Minneapolis - September 3, 2008 - The Lydiard Foundation, a non-profit organization that preserves and promotes the Lydiard training system, has teamed with McMillanElite to provide support for emerging elite distance runners.

"The first running book I read was Lydiard's classic Running the Lydiard Way and I was at his side when the master coach passed away. His training system has been crucial to the success of the McMillanElite athletes. I'm honored to be a part of Lydiard's legacy and am very grateful to Nobby and Lorraine for supporting our team," said Greg McMillan, coach of McMillanElite.

The Lydiard system has proven itself as the surest path to success for emerging elite distance runners. The systematic, long-term development of the athlete is a perfect model for creating future champions in distance running.

Says Nobby Hashizume, co-founder of the Lydiard Foundation,"The Lydiard Foundation is excited to be part of what Greg is doing in Flagstaff. Arthur loved helping young athletes like those in the McMillanElite group and one of our initiatives at the Foundation is to help deserving elite runners. This partnership is a great start to that initiative."

Having won an Olympic bronze medal after training under the Lydiard method, Lorraine Moller, co-founder of the Lydiard Foundation, knows the work it takes to reach the top. "I was so lucky to have a smart, progressive program as the foundation of my training. The McMillanElite athletes are well on their way to success and we look forward to watching their development as they use Lydiard's principles over the next few years," says Moller.

About the Lydiard Foundation
The Lydiard Foundation's purpose is to provide a focal point so that Arthur Lydiard's work is protected and promoted for the benefit of current and future generations. The Foundation develops and offers coaching education courses, international coaching workshops, training camps, lecture tours, internet newsletters and technical support to athletes and coaches interested in Lydiard's method.
